Raggie Morrisons was established in 1994 by Viv Morris with Peter Morris providing the music. Our original name was Deeside Clog Morris, we soon discovered there were many Deesides in the UK. After much deliberation the Group adopted the name ‘Raggie Morrisons’ which was the name of the old Draper’s Shop in Aberdeen, this was demolished in 1985 and Marks & Spencer'’s now stands on this site
Our original dance kit - tartan pinafore, white petticoat, white apron
and clogs was designed by the late Sheena Dixon with the help of
the side.
We are a small happy group who dance the North West Morris and
Garland dances. Currently we are the only team in Scotland
dancing in this tradition.
We dance out on festival Days, at Castles, Galas, Functions, or
where-ever we are asked within reason.
What is Clog dancing?
North-West Clog Morris originated in the mills and on barges around the North West England and South West Scotland during the late 18th century. Clogs which were made of wood with leather uppers and irons on the soles were worn by the workers as they were cheap, hardwearing and kept their feet warm and dry in winter and were cool to the feet in summer. It is said that while the weavers in the weaving sheds worked their looms they tapped out rhythms to the noise of the shuttle and picking stick that flew across the looms at great speed. By doing this they created and made up dance routines, which were usually danced during local festivals and processions. Competition between different teams was fierce, with new dances and figures being closely guarded secrets.
